Pools are starting to reopen across the bay area and it's important to remember that drowning is the #1 cause of unintentional death for kids ages 1-4.
Here's what you need to know to keep your kids safe while having fun.
- Talk to your kids about water safety. Teach them not to go near a pool when there isn't an adult around. Tell them over and over just as you would instruct them about crossing the street.
- When your child is in the water make sure there is a designated water watcher. Our morning show producer Karena Velazquez ended up saving a random little girl the other day from drowning in a pool because she was paying attention even though there were a bunch of adults in the pool. "When everybody is watching, nobody is watching."
- Teach your child basic water skills. Should they lose their float device in the water they would at lease have some basic skills to help them.
