The song was awesome on it's own but the video really pushed it over the top with it's special effects. The director, Richard Lowenstein, claimed that the visual effects in "Need You Tonight" were created by cutting up 35mm film and photocopying the individual frames, before re-layering those images over the original footage. Wow! Cool, right?
In the flips cards in the "Mediate" section of the video: Ever wonder what the date 9-8-1945 represented? It's the Australian date format is 9 August 1945, and that date is when the atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan. Little history lesson for ya. Remember when music used to have a message back in the day?
Anyway, the video went on to win five MTV Video Music Awards including 1988 Video of The Year and was ranked at number twenty-one on MTV's countdown of the 100 greatest videos of all time. Now THAT's the jam!
