UBER & LYFT Rides In The Bay Area Could End As Early As Tomorrow

UBER said that Bay Area service could stop as soon as tomorrow, Thursday, Aug. 20th. A court ruling expected as early as today will determine whether Uber and Lyft will be able to operate within California. Both companies have been threatening to halt service after a court ruled last week that their employees should be classified as employees instead of independent contractors.

According to the ruling Uber and Lyft had ten days to contest the decision or make their drivers employees. Both companies said that they would need more time to make the switch to the new employment model.

If Uber and LYFT don't win their appeal service could be shutdown until November. That's when California voters are expected to decide on Proposition 22, a ballot initiative aiming to keep "app-based transportation (rideshare) and delivery drivers as independent contractors" while adopting new labor and wage benefits for drivers.
